About Swami Chinmayananda
Swami Chinmayananda was one of the greatest Vedantic masters of the 20th
century. For more than 40 years he travelled the world, unraveling the ancient Vedic
teachings in a clear, logical and scientific style, spiced up with his
scintillating oratory and rib-tickling humor. His Life itself is a teaching
and an inspiration...
Originally named Balakrishnan, was born into an orthodox Hindu family in Ernakulam, Kerala, on 8 May, 1916. He was brilliant in his studies and earned an MA from Lucknow University. He became a journalist and was a dedicated activist during India's freedom struggle.
Swami Sivananda initiated him into the sanyasa order and gave him the name Swami Chinmayananda on 25th February, 1949. Swami Sivananda sent him to pursue further studies of scriptures under Swami Tapovanamji Maharaj, in Uttarakashi.
Burning with the urge to share this wonderful wisdom, Swami Chinmayananda started the Chinmaya Mission. He moved from corner to corner of India teaching the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and other scriptures. He earned great reputation as an extraordinary orator and a masterly exponent of India’s culture, its literary heritage and scriptural lore. Swami Chinmayananda also traveled and taught extensively abroad.
Today he is one of the
world-figures who have hoisted the flag of India’s spiritual heritage not only
in this country but also in the other countries of the world.
