The auspicious sound of the Conch creates a positive vibe in the atmosphere or the minds of the worshippers. An age-old tradition, it is still used in temples and after all the important poojas or ceremonies and on sacred occasions.

The word 'Shankh' (Conch) comes from the two Sanskrit words "Shum" which means 'something good' and "Kham" meaning 'water'. Hence the meaning of Shankam is conch holding the sacred water. It is also said word Shankara was been derived from Sankha-kara which means 'conch-blower' (shankha means conch and Kara means blower).

When the conch is blown with controlled breath, the primordial sound of "Om" emanates from it. This eternal sound is the origin of all Vedas. All knowledge enshrined in the Vedas is an elaboration of the omnipresent sublime sound of Om. It was this sound that was chanted by the Lord before manifesting the cosmos. It represents the creation and the Truth behind it.

The blowing of a conch shell enhances the positive psychological vibrations such as courage, determination, hope, optimism, willpower and bliss can be felt by all people assembled and also by the blower.

As soon as the Shank is blown the frequencies of divine energy (Shakti) are emitted into atmosphere due to sound generated. This increases the proportion of shakti (energy), chaitanya (consciousness) and anand (bliss) in the environment and that is why the negative energies get distressed and dissolved.

A person holds a conch shell to his ear, the sound of the ocean humming gently can be heard. It is actually the natural vibration or cosmic energy of the earth that gets magnified on entering the conch shell.

The moment Shank is blown our brain is emptied of all thoughts. Thus, the conch sound served to briefly elevate people’s minds to a prayerful attitude even in the middle of their busy daily routine. It represents dharma or righteousness that is one of the four goals (purushaarthas) of life. The sound of the conch is thus also the victory call of good over evil. It has been used as a trumpet in prayer and historically used in the call of war.
